Pirates News and Notes

The Anaheim Ducks announced yesterday that Tim Brent was reassigned to the Portland Pirates, Anaheim’s development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL).

Brent’s assignment comes less than one week after he arrived back in Portland from Davos, Switzerland, where he played in the Spengler Cup tournament for Team Canada. He was recalled to the Ducks along with forward Bjorn Melin, who is still with Anaheim.

Brent, 22 (3/10/84), appeared in his first two NHL games following his recall on Jan. 4, going scoreless. The Cambridge, Ontario native has collected seven goals, nine assists for 16 points with 32 penalty minutes (PIM) in 25 games with Portland this season.

Brent was drafted by Anaheim in the third round (75th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

The Ducks also placed Travis Green on waivers, where he was quickly claimed by his former team, Toronto Maple Leafs. In seven games with Anaheim, he’s scored one goal and one assists. It was unlikely he would have reported to Portland.

The Pirates have also been busy with transactions as forward Garett Bembridge was assigned to the Augusta Lynx, Portland’s primary affiliate in the ECHL.

Bembridge, 25, has played 15 games for Portland this season, scoring three goals, two assists for five points.

The Pirates have also released Maxim Ouellet from his PTO. Ouellet, who has not seen any game action with the Pirates this season, has elected to sign with a team in Switzerland.

To replace Ouellet, the Pirates have signed Dov Grumet-Morris to a PTO.

Grumet-Morris, 25, has played in five games with the Pirates this season with a record of 1-1-2 with a 1.78 GAA and a 0.950 save percentage.

The Nashville Predators have placed former Pirates goaltender Michael Leighton on waivers. It’s likely that Leighton will be claimed and one team could be the Anaheim Ducks, who lost Leighton to Nashville when they tried to recall him on November 27th.

Since that time, he had yet to start a game and played only 19:57 in relief of Predators starter Chris Mason.

The deadline for Leighton to be claimed is noon EST, if not claimed he will be assigned to the Nashville Predators AHL club in Milwaukee.
